In recent times, when the whole world is going through digitalization, it is rather nice to see that there is growing interest in shaving the ancient way. A large number of men everywhere around the globe are now reaching for the straight razor.
Back in the days, it was quite normal for men to indulge in the art of shaving with a straight razor. If you feel like joining this new renaissance, you will need a proper set of tools. This is why we feel the urge to present you with some of the finest straight razors out there, coming from a company called DOVO.
A Brief History of DOVO
So, what’s behind the name? DOVO Solingen is actually derived from the names of the two entrepreneurs, Dorp and Voos. They started the company all the way back in 1906. The company hails from Solingen, a small town in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.
Solingen is sometimes fondly referred to as the “City of Blades” as it is the birthplace of many companies famous for the production of razors, scissors, knives, and swords. There is even a law there which says that all hot-forged products bearing the name of Solingen must use raw materials from the area and produced to strict local standards.
Since the very beginnings, DOVO has built quite a reputation for quality cutting tools, so it’s no wonder that nowadays it is one of the most respected companies in the world as far as straight razors are concerned.
How to Choose a DOVO Straight Razor?
As the highest level of craftsmanship goes into the production of DOVO straight razors, it goes without saying that all of their blades are ready to shave right out of the box.
If you want the proper tool for your shaving endeavors, you simply need to take care of certain aspects. Always choose one that suits your level of skill and one that will provide you with the most comfortable feel, both in your hand and on your face.
There are also two different grinds to choose from, hollow and Scandinavian. But if you’re a beginner, you won’t be able to feel any significant difference.
Also, you can choose between different sizes of straight razors, along with three different tips - round one, square, and barber’s notch. We strongly suggest going for rounded tips, as they are the safest and the easiest to handle.
As for the blade size (or width), we recommend going for a thinner blade as it is easier to use and provides much more room for movements across the contours of your face.
DOVO Straight Razor Materials
In order to choose your ideal DOVO straight razor, you will have to decide upon the razor material. It isn’t that hard, as there are only two to choose from - stainless steel and carbon steel.
The main advantage of carbon steel over its stainless counterpart is that it is more flexible, which means that it will be much easier to work with when the time comes for sharpening. On the other hand, it also means that it will stay sharp for a shorter period of time compared to a typical stainless steel blade.
If you’re aiming for the finest and closest shave possible, you definitely need a carbon steel DOVO straight razor. Also, beginners should opt for a carbon steel razor as it is much easier to use than a stainless steel.
Last but not least, you should keep in mind that carbon steel blades are rather prone to rust, so they need to be completely dried after use.
Stainless steel blades are much more common, as they are quite reliable, but are significantly heavier than the carbon steel ones. It can never be as sharp as a carbon steel blade, and it is also a little harder to sharpen. That being said, it probably isn’t the best choice for those who are yet to enter the magical world of shaving with a straight razor.

DOVO Straight Razor Carbon
Why don’t we aim for the stars from the very beginning? This is a half hollow carbon steel DOVO straight razor. It sports a blade depth of 5/8” and is a perfect choice for those looking for their first straight razor. It may not be the cheapest one out there, but you can consider it a good investment
Sharp right out of the box, it will provide you with a great feel. The wooden handle not only looks great, but also wields much control in your hand. Beginners will struggle to find a straight blade as safe as this one.
Even though it makes for quite a graceful shaving experience, you will sometimes have to make a few more strokes than expected.
Last but not least, it comes in a wonderful carrying case.
DOVO Shavette with Olivewood Handle
This is basically a small DOVO straight razor, and it can be considered as training wheels for full-size straight razors. It is designed to use a standard double-edge blade and doesn’t have a blade of its own.
The shavette is meant to teach you how to use a straight razor, as it opens up and holds like a straight razor except it uses a disposable double-edge razor blade to cut. Right out of the box it features a little pre-bent blade, which you simply attach to the rod holder and you’re ready to go.
Even though it is much cheaper than the other products reviewed here, the Shavette features top-shelf materials and it is built to last. Still, it isn’t a true straight razor, but you might want to try this first before switching to something more serious.
DOVO 6/8” Full Hollow Carbon Steel Straight Razor
Over here we have a classic DOVO straight razor. As the name suggests, it features a 6/8” razor and it comes with an acrylic handle finished in classy gloss black.
Even though it is basically an entry-level model, it still boasts a carbon steel blade and provides a really nice and close shave. As we’ve explained earlier, the carbon steel blade will need to be sharpened every now and then, but all in all this is probably the best model to start experiencing the lost art of shaving with a straight razor.
Dovo "Astrale" Straight Razor, 5/8"
Now this here is probably the Rolls-Royce of straight razors. It comes with a black carbon steel blade etched in 24K gold which says “DOVO Astrale”. You will know that this is very special the very moment you lay eyes on it.
It goes without saying that this isn’t a DOVO straight razor for beginners, and as such it is priced accordingly. If we’ve ever seen a close shave, this has to be the razor that achieves it. Of course, we didn’t really expect anything but a spectacular shaving experience.
Besides the hefty price tag, the only problem with this razor is that it needs to be sharpened on a regular basis, which wouldn’t be the case if it were made from stainless steel.
DOVO Inox Straight Razor with Olive Wood Handle 5/8 Inch
This might seem similar to the Diamant, but the DOVO Inox straight razor is more of an exercise in understated beauty. It features the same size and blade material but is a little more sophisticated, just like its name implies.
The handle is made from Yew wood, while the carbon steel blade features a highly polished finish. This can be used by both beginners and experienced straight razor shavers, and in both cases it rewards you with plenty of control and a smooth close shave.
The carbon steel blade needs proper maintenance in the form frequent sharpening to avoid losing that magical sensation each time you shave.
