Best Way How To Trim A Beard & Beard Oil Guide

Gentlemen, let’s face it, we have the fellas from ZZ Top to thank, in part, for making the long beard popular. You must remember that those gents were rather dapper Dan’s. They were sharp dressed men and their beards were stellar. Sporting a killer look with a long beard takes a little work and you must take pride in your facial hair. No storing a little snack for later!

Let’stalk about whipping that beard into shape. Nando from Saturday Night Live (Billy Crystal) said “it is better to look good than to feel good”. So let’s go, it’s time to look good, men!

We going to be talking about the best way how to trim a beard, how to groom a long beard, how to oil your beard, and some of the best beard products.

What is the Point of Beard Oil?

Taking Your Beard from Gnarly to Nice

Let’s face it, not all beards are created equally, nor is all hair. While your hair atop your head tends to be soft and manageable, the hair in your beard tends to be much different and needs special attention. Facial hair is a gnarly beast to tame to say the least. By nature, it is more coarse and seems to have a mind of its own. This leads to overworked oil glands in the skin of the face, which leaves the skin dry and flaky and an overall itchy mess.

The solution is simple and easy to implement in your routine. There are many choices of commercial oils and homemade concoctions. They all boil down to being light emulsifying blends sporting manly aromas, as well as unscented blends. Unlike hair conditioner you may use in the shower, when it comes to beard oil, less is more! Most seem to agree the best time to apply oil to the beard is just after showering and taking advantage of a clean beard and open pores of the face.

Consider these Tips

  • Just towel dry and for most beards just two or three drops of oil rubbed into the hands and then worked through the beard is more than sufficient.
  • Depending on how long your beard is, you may need to experiment with the actual amount, but keep in mind to take care to not overdo it.
  • Drippy beards are not a good look. Use a good quality beard comb to then further work the oil into the hair of the beard and work it down into the skin. Be sure to comb upwards before you do your final comb down. You will find that in no time at all your beard will not only look great with a healthy shine, but it will be noticeably softer to the touch and lead to healthier, more moisturized and better feeling skin.
  • Now that you know why to use beard oil and really have a grasp of how simple it is to use proper application technique, there is one last thing to consider. While many agree that the best time to apply is just out of the shower, it may be more of a personal preference as to how often you apply.
  • Perhaps you may start with daily use of oil to help make your beard behave. Maybe you would consider oiling that beautiful beard weekly, or twice a week once you have everything under control.
  • At this point, you may consider it more of a maintenance tool rather than a chore to do daily. But you must beware, for some using these wonderful healthy oils, especially those with pleasing natural aromas, they can become a bit of an addiction. In the end, is that really so bad?

Most addictions have negative consequences. The potential addiction to beard oil, in contrast, leaves you looking and feeling better with healthier skin and hair. With the results leaving you with a more touchable and irresistible beard, let’s face it, it is an addiction that leads to closer relationships!

How to Groom a Long Beard

Tame Your Bearded Dragon

Keep it Clean

  • Keeping things clean is the first step to proper maintenance.. There are a variety of products out there for good grooming and maintaining a long beard.
  • Depending on exactly how long your beard is, the most convenient time and place to get the deepest clean is in your daily shower.
  • Shampoo and condition as you normally would and take advantage of the steamy hot environment to help soften those locks and open those pores.

Comb and Beard Oil

  • After drying, it is a good idea to use a wide-toothed comb to get things going in the right direction and undo those tangles.
  • If you have the time, then progress to a fine-toothed comb to really get in there and get things uniform.
  • Next, it is time to moisturize with some beard oil. With or without scent, you’ll want to grab your favorite blend and work a little in your hands at first, then apply and work through your beard until you finally get to work some of that oil into your skin.
  • Take your time and give that skin the massage it deserves!
  • Next, you’ll want to go back to that fine comb again get things looking good and to more evenly distribute the oil throughout the beard. Hopefully, you remembered that a little oil goes a long way.

Hair dry that Beard

  • Now it’s time to bust out that hair dryer and begin to bring your beard to a mostly dry state.
  • Leaving it just slightly damp is a good idea to avoid drying out the hair follicles. Again, back to the comb.
  • Now that you are close to finishing up, you will want to work that hair in the proper direction.
  • If, for example, you have some hair that wants to flip out forward, then you simply work that hair from behind and curl or train it backwards in order to let it know who is boss!

Continuous Maintenance

  • A fine and high quality beard brush can be used now to really polish the surface hair into that finely-tuned finished product you and your admirers were seeking.
  • Not done yet! Take a few moments a couple times per week depending on how fast your hair grows to really pay attention to any split ends or fly away hairs that refuse to conform to your will. After singling them out, grab the scissors or electric shaver and do what you must! Making an example out of the non-conformists will go a long way to setting the example for the rest of your potentially rebellious follicles!

It may sound like a lot of work, but really it is not. It only takes a few extra minutes in the morning to get yourself finely tuned and ready to strut your stuff on the stage of life and clearly you were meant for this role!
